Here is a book for anyone who's ever wondered what it's like to live on a Greek island permanently. David Fagan packs these pages with funny stories about the characters and situations he has encountered and
observed as he has stuck to the "Rock" with the
tenacity of a limpet for the last twenty years.
Meet
the residents of Hydra: “Top Job” Jannis the electrician, the “Barefoot
Countess”, not to be confused with the “Barefoot Tribe”, Pan –
Hydra’s answer to Rambo, Mike the Bully, Peter the Painter, the Mayor,
Dardo the Donkey, the Sixth Beetle, the Muleteers Union, Hydra’s Yayas
and a host of others.
Visit
Bills Bar, Dirty Corner, the Three Brothers Taverna and the Garden. Stroll
down Donkey Shit Lane, take the coast road to Vlichos and sail on the
Saronic Gulf high seas looking for wrecks and inspiration for sculptures.
Haunt the monasteries and dig for hidden treasure in the historic mansions
of Hydra.
Immerse
yourself in the intrigue and daily politics of everyday life on this
supposedly serene, picture postcard island - all from the comfort of your
armchair!
“I
remember thinking that he was going to electrocute himself and that I
should say something. But then I figured he was the qualified
technician and I was new to the island. Everything was new to me,
including the fact that electrical wiring was supposed to look like
spaghetti; bare un-connected wires protruding from weird places were
normal.
I let him throw the switch—”
The
search for a simpler, less
complicated way of life was the quest of David Fagan. For nearly twenty
years he has pursued this ambition, only recently concluding that perhaps
simplicity is unobtainable given the amount of evidence he has amassed
during almost half his lifetime spent on Hydra Island, Greece.
After
liquidating his life in the rat race, he plunged enthusiastically into
life on the “Rock”. In spite of unforeseen obstacles, he
optimistically persevered with an assortment of “careers”, each
exposing him to un-anticipated situations and characters.
In
this book, he fondly reminisces over just a few of the far from
uncomplicated, circumstances he found himself in, bringing his brand of
diplomacy, sensitivity, and humour to the telling of tales about the
people and place that he now regards as his family and home.
